The full moon: how to create your own ritual.

The practice of moon rituals, has become more prevalent again of late. Which is very exciting to see! More of us have become increasingly in touch with our natural flow and cycles; which in turn allows us to be more in touch with who we are and what we desire.

The full moon's energy is masculine (yang), so it can feel quite powerful to those who are sensitive to its energy. Everyone is affected by the moon's energies, and can usually feel their emotions boiling to the surface, ready to be purged. This can come out as creative energy or it can manifest as anxious energy. Depending on how you feel during the full moon, is how you decide to practice your ritual.

If you are moon sensitive, you may feel heighten emotions leading up to the full moon. I like to explain it as if the moon is pulling the unresolved/suppressed emotions to your consciousness. Just like how it has a pull on the ocean tides.

You will often see the results of your hard work around the full moon. The full moon is a time to reap and celebrate what has been harvested. Harvested in a physical and an emotional sense. Enjoy your rewards and give thanks to what the universe has gifted you.

Secrets are often revealed around the full moon. Your shadow has the light of the moon shone on it with no where to hide. This is why journalling/shadow work is a great full moon ritual to help to process any heavy emotions.

The full moon is a great time to think about what you need to let go of in order to grow and flourish. To make space for the new. Much like trimming your plant of dead leaves, or a snake shedding its skin.

If you have never practiced a full moon ritual before, it may feel daunting as to where to begin. Below is my blueprint on how to get started with your full moon ritual.

Step 1: Add the full moon dates into your calendar.

Firstly, I recommend adding the dates of the full moon's to your diary or calendar. Set a reminder on your phone so that you can prepare for your ritual. Find out at timeanddate.com

Step 2: Begin small.

For your first ritual, I recommend starting small. Start with one thing. Then add something else to your next one. A full moon ritual doesn't have to be elaborate. It is for you and for no-one else. Let your intuition guide you. If all you want to do is go outside and bathe in the moonlight, then that is a beautiful ritual for yourself.

A full moon ritual doesn't have to be elaborate. It is for you and for no-one else.

Step 3: Suggested activities for your ritual.

The full moon is a time of abundant energy and transformation. The energy can either make you feel energetic and passionate, or you may feel overwhelmed and anxious. The moon will illuminate the parts of you that you need to focus on during the next cycle. Your ritual will reflect this. Ground yourself and avoid starting anything new or signing contracts. Below are some recommended activities to consider as part of your ritual. Choose only what resonates with you and what you feel will benefit you at the time of the current full moon. Your ritual is allowed to be different every time. It is a reflection of where you are at mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Suggested full moon activities:

Relax your mind & body

  • Have a relaxing bath, shower or swim

  • Sit in the steam sauna or an infared sauna

  • Relax with a sound bowl meditation or a guided meditation or your own visual meditation

  • Sit in a salt room for salt therapy

  • Have a massage or a facial

  • Have a session of reiki or acupuncture or reflexology or hypnotherapy

  • Go for a walk in nature

Cleanse your space

  • Declutter a space that needs clearing

  • Smoke cleanse with a dried sage or lavender stick or palo santo or incense of choice

  • Spray your space with a energy clearing spray

  • Clap your hands to change the energy in your space

  • Clean your space that needs cleaning

  • Ring a bell to clear the energy

  • Play music that represents the energy that you wish to feel in your space

  • Dance to change up or release your energy

    Nourish your senses

  • Sip on your favourite drink - I recommend cacao

  • Nourish your body with a home cooked meal

  • Listen to music that fits the vibe you are after

  • Burn incense or put on your essential oil diffuser

    Express gratitude

  • Write down what you are most thankful for

  • Tell someone why you are grateful for them

  • Thank items for how they have assisted you - especially before you get rid of them

Connect with your spirit team & intuition

  • Practice a divination of choice (tarot/oracle cards, pendulum, meditation, prayer etc)

  • Stream of conscious journalling

  • Notice signs from them (angel numbers etc)

Reset your altar

  • Place sacred tools under then moonlight to recharge, cleanse and empower them for magickal practices (crystals, wands etc)

  • Create moon water - place filtered water in a jar and place under the full moon

  • Cleanse your altar & create a full moon one

Celebrate your life

  • Organise a gathering with your coven (or friends) and celebrate life or an accomplishment!

Step 4: Consider the type of moon and what it represents to you

If you want to know how the full moon reflects yourself at a personal level, consider the type of full moon and what it represents. This will determine the type of energy that this full moon will bring for you. For example, if it is an Aries full moon, and you are an Aries Sun or Rising, then childlike activities will be of benefit such as painting, dancing or any activity that you enjoyed as a child (this also applies to the collective). If you have Aries in your 6th House, then suggested activities would include movement, rituals, health & wellbeing. I’ll be sharing more resources and content in the future about this topic. However, ultimately the meaning of the full moon is what you intuitively give to it. There is no right or wrong for how you decide to practice your full moon ritual.

Step 5: You do you.

Ultimately, you are the master of your rituals. Listen to your intuition on how you wish to practice each ritual. Each time will be different and will have a different vibe to it. How your friends choose to practice their ritual, doesn't mean it is how you should. Sometimes you may want to meet with your friends (or coven) to celebrate together, or other times you may want to be alone. This is all perfectly more than fine. You do you.

Time to practice your full moon ritual.

Gentle Reminder:

  • The full moon is around for 2-3 days, not just one.

  • You can practice your ritual during the day (charge your tools at night if you want the moonlight).

  • It is ok to forget to practice. Or if you choose not to practice.

  • You do you.

Please go gently with yourself.
